Analysis

All 3 promoted Premier League clubs went straight back down in 2023-24 and again in 2024-25, so a newcomer's games often carry the widest gap of the round. Leeds and Sunderland, both promoted in 2025, are still in the division for 2026-27, so each new side deserves its own read after its first few weeks.

Six relegations in two seasons

Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton came up in 2023 and all went down a year later, and Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton did the same in 2024-25. The spending gap between the top division and the Championship is wide enough that a promotion squad rarely closes it in one summer, and it shows in the scorelines as well as the table. A promoted side away at a top 6 club can spend long spells without the ball. Leeds and Sunderland broke that run, so a newcomer is best judged on its first 8 or 10 rounds.

Corners follow whoever is chasing

A corner count follows territory, so it moves with the score. The side behind pushes on and wins corners, while the side in front sits deeper and concedes them. An Under 12.5 corners line fits a game where neither team is expected to pin the other back for long, and an early goal for the favorite can push the count up, because the team that went behind now has to attack.
